The Academic Writing Service
Is the course literature difficult? Do you wonder what “analyse” really means? Do your texts lack a clear line of argument? The Academic Writing Service is here to help!
The Academic Writing Service offers guidance in study skills, academic writing, and oral presentations. All students and participants are welcome, regardless of course or level of ambition.
Get help with everything related to “studying”
The purpose of the Academic Writing Service is to help you, as a student, develop your academic craftsmanship—everything that falls under the rather vague concept of “studying”. This might include planning your study time, reading and understanding course literature, referencing sources, expressing yourself academically in speech and writing, creating coherence in your texts, and delivering engaging presentations – in Swedish or English.
A wide range of activities
The Academic Writing Service offers a variety of activities, presented below.
Individual guidance
As a student, you are entitled to three individual 45-minute sessions per term focusing on study techniques, writing, or oral presentations. A session may address any aspect of academic literacy, for example:
- creating a weekly study plan
- reviewing an exam text before submission
- discussing the structure of a thesis chapter
- practising an oral presentation.
You decide how you wish to use the session. If you find your study situation generally overwhelming, we can work it out together. You are also welcome to come in pairs, for instance if you are co-writing a thesis.
Guidance online or on site at Anna Lindh Library
You can receive guidance either online via Zoom or in the Academic Writing Service's room at the Anna Lindh Library. Sessions will also be available at Karlberg – further information about times and locations will follow.
No proofreading – “help towards self-help”
Before a session, you may send in a text for reading, including work due for assessment. However, the Academic Writing Service does not correct or proofread texts. The focus is on “help towards self-help”, offering strategies that enable you to gradually master the academic craft and develop as both student and writer. The Centre’s tutors do not read entire theses but focus on selected parts.
Book sessions in Canvas
In Canvas, there are two separate course spaces: Språkverkstad (for the Officers’ Programme and all civilian programmes) and Språkverkstad HOP (for the Higher Officers’ Programme).

Drop-in sessions
Every Wednesday between 12:00 and 14:00, you are welcome to drop in at the workshop room in the Anna Lindh Library. Staff from both the Academic Writing Service and the Library will be available to answer questions about study techniques, database searches, reading, and writing, or to provide feedback on shorter texts. Drop-in sessions will also be arranged at Karlberg; more details will be provided later.
Guidance for students with study difficulties
Do you find studying more challenging than your classmates do? The Academic Writing Service has expertise in supporting students with specific learning needs, such as dyslexia or neuropsychiatric conditions. Book a session and we can discuss how to make your studies easier. You do not need a diagnosis or any documentation to receive this support.
Encourage your teachers
The Academic Writing Service also provides lectures and workshops within individual courses—for example on reading strategies, effective exam writing, or creating coherence in academic texts. Would you and your classmates like such a workshop? Ask your teacher to contact academicwriting@fhs.se
