Course content and structure
This course aims to introduce the student to the fields of crisis management, sustainability, and innovation, from a socio-technical perspective. The course covers an introduction to:
The course runs as a distance course. After covering the three fields ”crisis”, “sustainability” and “innovation” in lectures, seminars, literature and written assignments, the student links the three fields in a practical method application. The student is expected to actively participate in peer learning, by reading and commenting on other students’ written assignments, and by taking part in discussions.

- methods and tools in crisis management;
- United Nations’ Sustainable Development Goals in relation to crisis and innovation;
- socio-technical aspects of crisis and sustainability, including human behaviour in times of crisis, perceptions towards sustainable development, and ethics; and
- planning, management, innovation and development for sustainable solutions in society.

Grading Scale: Fail, Pass
The examination includes the submission of three individual written assignments on crisis management, sustainability, and innovation, respectively, as well as oral or written reflection on the respective assignments, in which the student also discusses the work of other students. If a participant has not been able to participate actively in a mandatory part, the examiner can decide on a supplementary assignment.
Practical method application
Scope: 3.0
Grading Scale: Fail, Pass, Pass with Distinction
The examination includes submission of a written project report covering the three topics crisis, sustainability, and innovation, and their intersections. The examination also includes a presentation of the project.
Grading
Grading takes place through a three-point grading scale: Fail (U), Pass (G) and Pass with Distinction (VG).
A Pass (G) on the course requires a Pass (G) on the written assignments and a Pass (G) on the practical method application. Obtaining a Pass also requires active participation in the course’s discussions, which can be oral or written, and which include interaction with other participants.
A Pass with Distinction (VG) on the course requires, besides the requirements for a Pass (G), also a Pass with Distinction (VG) on the practical method application.
Grading criteria are reported at the latest at the start of the course.
The examiner can decide on supplementary assignments in order to achieve a Pass grade on the course. Examinations received late are not graded unless there are special reasons approved by the examiner. Supplementary assignments must be submitted no later than five working days after the results and supplementary assignments have been announced for the examining part in question, unless there are special reasons approved by the examiner.
Restrictions in Number of Examinations
There is no limit on the total number of examination opportunities.

Transitional provisions
When the course is no longer offered or when the course content has changed substantially, the student has the right to be examined once per semester during a three-term period in accordance with this syllabus.
Other regulations
The course cannot be included in a degree with another course whose content fully or partially corresponds to the content of this course.
If the Swedish Defence University has formally decided that the student is entitled to receive special educational support due to a disability, the examiner may decide on alternative forms of examination for the student.
The course director will conduct an evaluation on the completion of the course, which will form the basis for any changes to the course.
