Welcoming all new students!

On August 29, the autumn semester started here at the Swedish Defence University with an introduction day for new students. The autumn semester also marks the start of the Swedish Defence University's new Master's programme in International Operational Law.

The introduction day for students was filled with information meetings for the programmes and courses and the student union's introductory meetings for Swedish and international students.

Vice-Chancellor Robert Egnell welcomed the new students.

We are living in a time of great international concerns. In addition to the security situation, we also face challenges related to climate change, pandemics, terrorism and migration. The Swedish Defence University's courses are more relevant than ever and you will be in high demand, says Robert Egnell.

New International Master's Programme in International Operational Law

The Swedish Defence University's new Master's programme in International Operational Law complements the International Master's programmes in Development of Systems for Defence and Security and Politics, Security and War. Approximately 30 students will commence this new programme this autumn, about a third of whom are international students from EU and non-EU countries, including Emma Gonzales-Puell from Belgium, who already has a master's degree in international law.

I learned about the programme through the articles of Professor Jann Kleffner from the Swedish Defence University, which I read during my last Master's programme. I'm very happy that I was accepted and I think the civilian and military mix at SEDU is very interesting, says Gonzales-Puell.

Earlier course start for the Higher Joint Command and Staff Programme Directorate and the Officer Programme

Already on 8 August, the officers at the Higher Joint Command and Staff Programme started their studies. They have been selected by their unit commanders and by the Armed Forces Headquarters, and this programme is unique in its kind. The course is offered as a one-year Master's degree in War Studies for those being promoted to Major or Lieutenant Commander (N), and as a two-year Master's degree in War Studies for those being promoted to Lieutenant Colonel/Commander (N).

The new cadets of the Officer Programme registered on August 19. After being welcomed by Vice Chancellor and Brigadier General Anders Persson, the queue for enrollment at the Military Academy Karlberg was long. One of the 211 cadets who registered is Oliver Nagy from Uppsala.

It is fun and exciting. I want to work in the Air Force and hope to contribute as much as possible, said Oliver Nagy.

The Officer Programme is a professional degree at undergraduate level and comprises 180 credits. The programme includes subjects such as war science, leadership and management, and military technology.
