Systems science for defence and security

Systems science for defence and security is a subject at the intersection of the social sciences and engineering, examining how both technical and social components affect the systems used for society’s defence and security.

Focus on use

It is easy to think of technical systems as purely technical. However, these systems are used by people in organisational and cultural contexts, and if they are not adapted to and developed in line with their intended use, the desired effect will not be achieved.

Unique in Sweden

The subject of systems science for defence an security is unique in Sweden, and only a few universities worldwide offer equivalents. At the Swedish Defence University, the subject is included in three of our programmes:

The Master’s programme Innovation, Defence and Security

The Master’s programme Innovation, Defence and Security is unique in Sweden, with only a handful of equivalents worldwide, sometimes coordinated under the concept of systems engineering. Within systems science for defence and security, both research and teaching address, for example, how military units with new equipment should be organised, how the next generation of combat aircraft should be designed to achieve maximum air defence effect, or other areas of societal importance such as maritime search and rescue capacity, food supply under challenging conditions, or communication during large-scale firefighting operations.

Officer's Programme with a specialisation in military technology

In the military technology specialisation of the Officer's Programme, systems science for defence and security is the main subject. Military technology describes and explains how technology and technical systems affect the ability to meet military challenges and how, as a commander, you can accomplish your tasks.

The Joint Advanced Command and Staff Programme

Also within the Joint Advanced Command and Staff programme, systems science for defence and security is a main subject. As an officer, your tools are to a large extent technical, and they are closely linked to tactics and operations. In systems science for defence and security, you gain knowledge of how technology affects military activities at all levels, as well as how the officer profession both shapes and is shaped by technology.

Understand systems for societal defence and security

In a short seminar, student Klara Andersson and Associate Professor Hans Liwång talk about the Swedish Defence University's master's programme Innovation, Defence and Security (formerly Defence and Security Systems Development).
