Professor Jann Kleffner appointed Extraordinary Professor

Jann Kleffner, Professor of International Law and Head of the Centre for International Operational Law, has been appointed Extraordinary Professor at the Faculty of Law of the University of Pretoria.

‘The appointment formalizes a long-standing cooperation with the Institute of International and Comparative Law in Africa (ICLA) at the Faculty of Law, which began with the establishment of winter schools on the interplay between international humanitarian and human rights law in 2011-2013 and the subsequent establishment of a Master-programme on the same theme in Pretoria’, says Jann Kleffner. ‘Nowadays, my involvement centers around the research project on ‘Freedom from Violence in Africa’, PhD supervision and conducting research on international law that have a specific relevance for the African continent.’

The Faculty of Law of the University of Pretoria is recognized as the leading law school on the African continent, with international law as one of its focal areas. It is engaged in an ambitious programme of further expansion in the area.

‘I am excited to be part of that journey and convinced that an increased cooperation between the Faculty of Law and SEDU’s Centre for International Operational Law will be of mutual benefit. We will be welcoming PhD students from Pretoria in Stockholm, co-organize events, such as research seminars and conferences and conduct joint research projects. As such, the partnership will be a vehicle for SEDUs ambition to internationalize’, says Jann Kleffner.
