Focus on women's resistance in new anthology

The new book Brave Women: Fighting for Justice in the 21st Century is a collection that brings together the voices of feminist activists and academics from across the globe.

With stories from countries including Brazil, South Africa, Afghanistan, and Georgia, the anthology offers examples of how women stand up for gender equality in societies marked by oppression and instability. Each chapter is co-authored and centres on a woman who has shown bravery in the face of oppression, whether organising under authoritarian regimes, building grassroots movements, or healing and resisting after violence. The book weaves together lived experience and critical analysis, showcasing feminist storytelling as a form of resistance.

A response to rising threats

“In an era marked by democratic decline, rising authoritarianism, and backlash against gender equality, the anthology offers a reminder that the everyday struggles and achievements of women on the front lines of social justice movements must not be overlooked”, says Julia Zulver, researcher at the Department of War Studies at the Swedish Defence University and one of the editors of the volume.

“This book gives space to voices too often excluded from academic and media discourse. It’s both a call to action and a model for how activism and scholarship can work together”, she continues.

Collaborative research with deep roots

Rather than relying on traditional fieldwork, the book was developed through long-standing, reciprocal relationships between researchers and activists.

“Each chapter emerged from conversations, oral and written, creating a horizontal, collaborative approach to knowledge production that reflects the spirit of feminist praxis”, says Julia Zulver.

For readers interested in gender politics and international solidarity

Brave Women is intended for anyone who believes in justice and wants to learn how women around the world resist violence, inequality, and authoritarianism. It is particularly suited for scholars, students, activists, and general readers interested in gender politics, international solidarity, and the power of lived experience”, says Julia Zulver.
