Leave from studies

If you want to pause your studies and continue at a later date, you can register leave from studies.

When you register leave from studies, it is important that you specify why you want leave from your studies and, if possible, attach documents that support your reasons with the application.

This is necessary because there are two different types of leave from studies: with or without a guaranteed place.

Your reasons for taking leave from studies determine which kind of leave is appropriate.

Approved leave from studies with a guaranteed place

If you can substantiate your reasons for taking leave from studies, and if the reasons are adequate, you can take leave from studies with your place guaranteed. This means you are guaranteed a place when you wish to continue your studies.

Copies of certificates or other documents that justify leave from studies with a place guaranteed must be certified by two people. Usually, leave from studies with a place guaranteed is granted for the following reasons:

Employer's decision to postpone leave

Enclose a certified copy of the employer's decision

Time-limited probationary position in the Swedish
Armed Forces (Occasional duties GSS/T)

Enclose a certified copy of the contract of
employment and a certified copy of a
decision/certificate stating the period of service

Illness

Enclose the medical certificate

Other reason

Enclose an explanation of the grounds and certified
copies of the documents that substantiate the reasons
cited.

Leave from studies without a place guaranteed

If you do not wish to refer to any specific reasons for taking leave from studies, you are not guaranteed a place when you would like to continue your studies. You are then granted leave from studies without a guaranteed place and may only continue your studies subject to availability.

We recommend that you contact a study counsellor before applying for approved leave from studies. You can receive help with planning your leave and the resumption of your studies. Study counsellors can also provide information about possible changes in the educational programmes offered.
